Pediatric cardiovascular intensive care training brings together over 75 experts at SJD Barcelona Children's Hospital

The Hospital hosts the second edition of the AEPC Cardiovascular Intensive Care Training Course, combining advanced theory with a practical approach focused on clinical excellence.

Over two intensive days, participants in the training course—organized by the Association for European Paediatric and Congenital Cardiology (AEPC)—updated and deepened their knowledge in the management of critically ill pediatric patients with cardiovascular conditions. The program covered key topics such as basic physiology and monitoring, mechanical ventilatory support, echocardiography in the CICU, neonatal care, and mechanical circulatory support (ECMO and VAD). High-fidelity simulations, designed to replicate real clinical scenarios, played a central role by allowing professionals to refine their skills in making quick and effective decisions in complex situations.

The training was led by Dr. Nicole Sekarski, Head of the Pediatric Cardiology Unit at CHUV – Lausanne University Hospital, and Dr. Joan Sánchez de Toledo, Head of the Heart Area and the Cardiology Service at SJD Barcelona Children’s Hospital. Both emphasized the importance of a multidisciplinary approach in the care of critically ill patients. In addition to featuring internationally renowned speakers, the course actively involved specialists from SJD across various departments—including Neonatology, Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery, Anesthesiology, and Pediatric Intensive Care—highlighting teamwork as a key pillar in critical care.

This event further strengthens SJD Barcelona Children’s Hospital’s position as a European benchmark in professional healthcare training, underscoring its commitment to innovation, research, and continuous improvement in pediatric cardiovascular care. The next edition of the course is already confirmed for April 2–3, 2026.
