Although children represent 25% of the world's population, only 1.6% of health venture capital is allocated to pediatric projects. Additionally, nearly half of pediatric medications are used off-label, and most medical devices are adaptations of adult models.
Coordinated by Sant Joan de Déu Barcelona Children's Hospital, the report led by EIT Health Spain highlights the barriers hindering innovation in this field and proposes strategic actions to ensure safe and effective medical solutions for children. To drive progress, the document recommends increasing investment, easing regulations, accelerating technology adoption, and strengthening hospital infrastructures.
"Child health remains one of the most neglected areas in innovation. This project brings visibility to disruptive solutions that can transform the landscape," states Izabel Alfany, Managing Director of EIT Health Spain.
