SJD Barcelona Children's Hospital hosts over 200 surgeons from around the world at the event on the surgical treatment of colorectal malformations in children

The first conference on the Surgical Treatment of Colorectal Issues in Children, organized by SJD Barcelona Children's Hospital and featuring international experts Alberto Peña and Andrea Bischoff, has been a great success. Over 200 international pediatric surgery specialists gathered at this key event to share knowledge and discuss advancements and innovative surgical techniques in the treatment of anorectal malformations.

Anorectal malformations are congenital defects with varying levels of severity. They can range from mild cases, which are resolved with surgical intervention, to more complex cases that require long-term medical follow-up and may impact the quality of life of the patients.

The Surgery Department at SJD Barcelona Children's Hospital is a leading center in the treatment of these types of malformations, which are rare. It is estimated that one in every 5,000 newborns is born with such issues. One of the main challenges in treating these malformations is that the detection of these defects does not occur during the perinatal period, but rather in the neonatal phase. This means that, when diagnosed in newborns, it is necessary to plan surgical interventions for families from very early ages.

During the event, it was presented how current surgical techniques are adapted to the severity of each case, aiming to restore functionality to the greatest extent possible and allow patients to lead a normalized life. Dr. Alberto Peña, a pioneer in colorectal malformation surgery, and Dr. Andrea Bischoff, also a leading expert in the field, shared their knowledge and experience with over 200 specialists from around the world who gathered at the Auditorium of SJD Barcelona Children's Hospital.

This event served as an essential meeting point for the medical community, which continues to work on improving treatments for these conditions, contributing to the well-being and quality of life of younger patients.
